SUMMER: PERSONAL STATEMENT WORKSHOP
Our personal statement workshop includes:
introduction to the writing portions of both the UC and Common App
review and analysis of personal insight and personal statement examples
topic generation – brainstorming, narrowing, and confirming for all five “big” essays (four UCs and one Common App)
writing activities to practice different approaches to application writing
1:1 meeting with Kate to confirm topics and discuss each student’s first steps
price INCLUDES a three-hour Stay Composed interactive editing session to review drafts (see below for details)

STAY COMPOSED (INTERACTIVE EDITING SESSIONS)
In these writing sessions, students will receive instant individualized feedback from a composed Writing Specialist. Students revise and/or write while a Writing Specialist reads and comments on his or her work in real time. Using this technique, students often do two to four drafts in one session. (Though a group setting, there will be no peer review; students only work on their own essays.)
Students who participate in our summer personal statement workshops will also attend one Stay Composed writing session as a part of their workshop fee.
We will also offer single Stay Composed sessions throughout the summer and fall — these will not be attached to the Workshop, and any student who has begun working with us can sign up.
Registrants will be notified 24 hours in advance if there are not enough students to fill the session and will be offered first priority in the next available session.
While there is no deposit required, as with all of our Cancellation Policies, students who cancel within 48 hours, or who do not show, will be charged the full amount for the session.
Single Stay Composed sessions generally begin in September. Check back for dates!
FALL: SUPPLEMENTS WORKSHOp

Schools on the Common and Coalition Applications are entitled to ask students as many questions as they want! Our hope is that students can use writing they have already done (we’re looking at you, UC essays!) and/or plan new essays with multiple prompts in mind. The first part of this workshop helps students to figure out how to manipulate topics so that they can aim to write as few essays as possible.
In the second part of the workshop, we will address the Why? questions. More than half of schools that use The Common Application ask for a supplemental essay like “Why are you interested in our university?” and/or “Why have you chosen this particular major?” In this workshop, students not only will learn how to most effectively demonstrate their interest in a particular school or major but also will have the opportunity to craft persuasive writing for one (or more) of these essays. Students will also conduct their own research and use the provided structure to write a draft for a top-choice school.
After the workshop, students will attend a Stay Composed interactive editing session, where they will receive feedback on up to 500 words of Why essays of their choice.
There is a five-day cancellation policy for these workshops.
All students taking this workshop must complete a Supplemental Essay Planning Chart (found at this link) and share with Kate at least 48 hours prior to the workshop.
